Guided Capture is FieldFaktor's full-screen camera. It knows every slot the inspection needs, files each photo as you shoot, and writes the caption for you. This article covers the screen, the controls, and what happens after each shot.
Open the camera#
- Open the project and tap the floating quick-actions button in the bottom-right corner.
- Tap Guided Capture.
The camera turns the phone to landscape and stays there for the whole session — everything else in the app stays portrait. Every capture saves to the device first and uploads later, so losing signal never stops a shot — see Working offline.
The screen at a glance#
- Capture area selector (top corner) — switches between Dwelling, Other Structures, and Personal Property.
- Section tabs — for the dwelling: Arrival, Roof, Front, Right, Back, Left, Interior, General.
- Item rail — the capture targets in the active section. A green badge on an item counts the photos it already has.
- Chips — one per capture slot on the active item. The highlighted chip is the slot your next photo files to.
- Context line — under the frame, the exact caption your next photo will carry, quoted before you press the shutter.
The Interior tab lists the rooms already added to the inspection; if it is empty, add rooms first in the Interior section.
Controls#
- Shutter — the ring color tells you where the photo goes: a white ring files it to the highlighted chip's slot, an orange ring means General. The hardware volume buttons also fire the shutter.
- Zoom — presets .5, 1, 2, and 3 where your phone's lenses support them (phones without an ultra-wide lens do not show .5). Pinch the frame for anything in between.
- Flash — cycles Off, Auto, On on cameras that support it.
- Front / Rear — flips the camera.
- VIDEO | PHOTO — switching to VIDEO arms recording; the shutter starts the take.
- Tap to focus — tap the frame to focus there.
Label it: the damage tray#
After each shot, a tray slides in with the photo's thumbnail so you can label without stopping:
- Damage pills — pick what the photo shows. A countdown ring wraps the active pill: about four seconds, doubled for interior shots because they ask two questions. Picking any answer restarts the clock.
- Project related? — shown on interior and personal-property shots: Yes or No, with Unknown on interior photos. The likely answer is pre-highlighted based on the damage you picked, and you can override it.
- The green check (Save now) saves immediately; the pencil (Edit) opens the full photo editor; the trash deletes the photo; a pause button stops the clock while you think.
The tray never blocks the next shot. Press the shutter again and the previous photo is kept with the toast "Photo kept — label later" — finish its label afterwards in Photo Review.
Roof close-ups: set the counts first#
On roof test squares, damage chips such as Hail hit and Wind stay locked until you enter the count with the steppers above the chips — tapping a locked chip shows "Set the count above". Photos never change a count; only the steppers do.
General photos#
The General tab (orange shutter ring) is for shots that belong to the job but not to a slot — site conditions, access, material deliveries. After the shot, the tray asks you to describe it, and saving shows "Saved to General". General photos stay out of every report unless you turn on Include in photo report for that photo in Photo Review.
Videos#
Switch the toggle to VIDEO, then press the shutter to record — up to 5:00 per take, with a 44 MB upload limit; recording stops automatically at either cap. Describe the take when it ends. Discard take is the only way to lose one — Stop, Save, and Skip all keep it. Videos are reference material only: they never appear in any report.
Mark up a photo#
Tap the pencil on the tray (or open any photo in Photo Review), then tap Markup to draw on the photo. Tools: Free draw, Circle, Square, Arrow, and Text, in five colors — red, yellow, blue, green, and white. Tap Save markup when you finish.
